Homage to Franz Léhar.
Performance of selected arias from the opera The Merry Widow.
Gala Dinner and Entertainment.
The Ball will be located in the authentic Venice, in a 14th century Palace, Palazzo Pesaro Papafava, with its precious gothic facade & its elegant quadriform gothic windows overlooking the canal of the Misericordia. The palace will be illuminated entirely with candlelights to create a memorable atmosphere.
Produced in Vienna for the first time in 1905, ‘The Merry Widow’ was acclaimed as a success; Franz Léhar composed an immortal masterpiece in a new music genre, the operetta, which soon would become a great success all over the world. A simple story of love and inheritance, this operetta becomes an extraordinary international success, partly due to the employ of the characteristic elements of the comedy and of the grand ball (it is also named ‘dancing operetta’).
Set in Paris, the operetta evolves around the attempt of Baron Zeta, Ambassador of Pontevedro, to find a suitable husband from Pontevedro for the rich Hanna Glavari, young widow of the court banker, and convince her to marry an old flame of hers, Count Danilo, in the hope of keeping her dowry in the country home.
